AL – Basic Laboratory Procedures / Hands-On Training, Emerging Contaminants

This full-day class provides a practical introduction to basic laboratory procedures, proper techniques, and emerging contaminants relevant to wastewater analysis.

Through lectures and hands-on lab work, participants will learn:
-Wastewater sampling techniques and considerations – sample storage, holding times, preprocessing.
-Safety protocols for biological samples and wastewater analysis. Proper use of PPE.
-Basic wastewater quality analysis – pH, conductivity, solids, BOD/COD, nitrogen, phosphorus. Use of meters, test kits, filtration, and analytical equipment.
-Extraction, concentration, and cleanup techniques for trace organic contaminant analysis.
-Overview of chromatography and mass spectrometry for wastewater. Method validation considerations.
-Emerging wastewater contaminants – pharmaceuticals, microplastics, PFAS, pesticides, personal care products. Analytical techniques and methodological challenges.

Upon completion, participants will gain practical knowledge of fundamentals, techniques, and quality control related to wastewater sampling and emerging contaminant analysis.

Troubleshooting common problems with pumps and control panels. Identifying symptoms and their causes. Systematic troubleshooting procedures. Performing repairs and replacement of defective components. Verification testing after repairs.

This course will cover latest developments with the Lead Service Line Inventory requirments. In addition information will be provided on the Alabama specific requirments and the progress across the State.

Attendees will receive training by industry professionals on the latest sludge de-watering, polymer make down, and collection system evaluation equipment. The training will educate participants on ways to effectively utilize different processes to reduce costs, workloads, and improve efficiency. Also included in this training session is Operator Safety Training. Industry standards such as Trenching, Shoring, Maintenance of Traffic, Chlorine Handling Procedures will be discussed.

In this class we will explore various types of water and wastewater laboratory instrumentation. We will show how these tools are used and how to insure yourself that you will have an accurate reading. We will also be discussing in detail Breakpoint Chlorination, and how using the Breakpoint curve can give you optimum results. We will conclude with Chlorine safety providing tips on how to reduce accidents, injuries, and death.

This is a comprehensive Microbiology Training session. During this session, we will cover essential topics such as proper Microscope Use and Staining techniques, as well as Safety Training for Trenching, Shoring, and Chlorine Handling. This session’s instructor is dedicated to providing you with the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure your success in the field of microbiology. The afternoon sessions will provide detailed safety procedures for all wastewater operators. Training includes microbiology identification, theory, and concepts, microscope use and staining techniques. Operator safety training about trenches, shoring, MOT training and CL2 handling.
