Corey Pitts Awarded
Joe & Jean Palmer Endowment Scholarship!


Corey Pitts has been awarded the 2006 Joe & Jean Palmer Endowment Scholarship by the National Rural Water Association. The Palmer Scholarship is a 4-year unrestricted award with a value of $8000 available to the children and step-children of Rural Water staff.

Corey is the son of Joy Wyatt and Frank Pitts. Frank’s wife, Kelly is the Administrative Assistant of South Carolina Rural Water Association. Corey will enter Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. in the fall of 2006.  His major course of study will be Education.

As a graduate of Clinton High School in South Carolina, Pitts is ranked 4th in his class where he has been active in many clubs including:  Student Council, Senior Beta Club, Youth Government, National Honor Society, Teacher Cadet and the Federation of Christian Athletes.  He has participated in Varsity Football and Weightlifting while also achieving various school honors such as National Young Leader Scholar, Senior Superlative – Most School Pride, and also named in Who’s Who Among American High School Students.  He has a weighted GPA of 3.75 and a 4.41 unweighted GPA and has received numerous academic awards and recognition.

Pitts is active in the Mountville Baptist Church including the Youth Group, Youth Missions Team, Interpretive Movement Team and Royal Ambassador.  He also is a member of the Laurens County Community Youth Theatre where he has performed in “The Mouse Who Didn’t Believe in Santa”, “The Baddest Angel Band”, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”, and “Guys and Dolls”.

Joe and Jean Palmer were known for their dedication to Rural America.  Their character ethics and morals contributed to the success of rural water nationwide.  A retired engineer and avid environmentalist, Joe Palmer was a prominent figure in the local, state and national water industry.  He served as cofounder of the Georgia Rural Water Association and was President of NRWA from 1994 to 1996.  Jean, a former science and chemistry teacher, had a deep sense of community and operated a number of successful businesses.

The Joe and Jean Palmer Endowment Scholarship honors the memory of true friends of rural water and ensures that their legacy lives on to help the children of the “Rural Water Family.”
