More relief moves into Louisiana as other states
brace for more storms
Disaster relief from several states is moving into Louisiana while
rural water associations in North and South Carolina brace for
tropical storm Hanna with Florida preparing for Hurricane Ike.
Response Teams from Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi are
assisting the field staff of the Louisiana Rural Water Association
in restoring water and wastewater service to the area. . Rural
water has 38 response members on the ground formed into 19 teams
targeting 15 parishes. Teams branched out from Alexandria, La., on
Thursday, working their way south. As teams assess needs,
information is relayed back to the Rural Water Operational Center in
Lafayette and resources such as generators are located and
transported where needed.
There has been very little structural damage to systems. Power loss
has been the primary concern. Teams are assisting with the
transportation of generation and water sampling once power has been
restored.
Mutual aid networks in North Carolina, South Carolina and
neighboring states in preparation for the storms approaching the
east coast. Response personnel and equipment, including portable
generators, pumps and spare parts, are ready to restore water
service in impacted areas. Hurricane experts in Miami, Fla.
currently predict Hanna to side-swipe the east coast starting
Saturday night. Water technicians from the Florida Rural Water
Association, well-experienced in hurricane response, are preparing
for Hurricane Ike. The current track predicts Ike making landfall
next Wednesday.
